BREAKING NEWS!! The Home Alone House Sold for $5.5M, But… Would You Trust Kevin with Your Home Security?

Welcome back to Home Habits with #yourHOMEgirl! This week, I was inspired by the Home Alone house, which recently sold for $5.5 million. In the iconic movie, Kevin - left home alone - turned his family’s home into a fortress when burglars tried to break into the McCallisters place; aka "the silver tuna", according to "Wet Bandit", Harry.

While the movie's hijinks are hilarious, Kevin’s situation reminds us just how important it is to protect our homes - without having to use swinging paint cans!

Let’s talk about how you can turn a lesson from Home Alone into an actionable habit to improve your home’s safety and security.

Why Home Security Matters

A well-secured home isn’t just about protecting your belongings - it’s about peace of mind. Whether you’re heading off for the holidays (like the McCallisters), going on vacation, or just enjoying a cozy night in, good security habits will help you sleep soundly.

Home Safety Tips Inspired by Home Alone

Here are a few modern upgrades Kevin might have appreciated his parents doing:

1️⃣ Install Smart Technology:
A video doorbell allows you to monitor your home in real time, even when you’re away. Pair it with smart locks for ultimate convenience. Trust me. It’s way easier than rigging a blow torch or getting your hands on a tarantula!

2️⃣ Set Timed Lights:
One of the burglars’ key strategies in Home Alone was targeting empty houses. Foil potential intruders by making your home appear occupied, even when it’s not, with programmed light schedules.

3️⃣ Secure the Perimeter:
From windows to doors, check that all entry points close securely. Trim trees or shrubs near these areas to reduce potential hiding spots.

4️⃣ Secure Your Valuables:
Instead of relying on a travel mannequin party to distract burglars, secure valuables in a fireproof and waterproof safe.

5️⃣ Lock All Doors And Windows:
Locking up might seem basic, but Kevin’s mom clearly forgot more than just her son! Make it a habit to double-check locks before leaving home or going to bed.

Make This a Habit

⏰ Habit Frequency: Do a quarterly check on your locks, alarm systems, and cameras. Make notes of anything that needs repairs or upgrades and schedule them as needed. If you’re planning a vacation, take some extra steps to secure your home.

BONUS TIP: Before long trips, ask a trusted neighbor, local family member, or friend to keep an eye on your house, collect mail, or even park a car in your driveway to help deter intruders.
