There’s a reason they say, “Out of sight, out of mind.” But when it comes to home maintenance, ignoring the low-traffic areas of your house can lead to unexpected problems. I was reminded of this over the weekend when my husband found a water leak in our basement storage room - a place we rarely check unless we’re grabbing paper towels or toilet paper.
Why It’s Important to Check Unused Spaces
Many homeowners focus on the areas they use every day - like the kitchen, bathrooms, and living spaces. But what about the places you don’t frequent? Basements, attics, and storage closets are common spots for leaks, pest activity, or even forgotten maintenance issues that could turn into bigger problems if left unnoticed.
Hidden Spots to Add to Your Routine Check:
✅ Basement & Crawl Spaces – Look for moisture, leaks, or musty smells that could indicate mold.
✅ Attics – Check for signs of pests, insulation issues, or roof leaks.
✅ Storage Closets & Guest Rooms – Dust buildup, humidity damage, and even minor leaks can go unnoticed here.
✅ Unused Bathrooms – Run the faucets and flush the toilets occasionally to keep plumbing in good shape.
✅ Garage & Utility Rooms – Inspect your water heater, HVAC system, and well pump for potential leaks.
Make It a Habit!
To avoid surprises, set a reminder to do a quick check of these areas at least once a week. Walk through or check each space, look for anything unusual, and catch small issues before they become big headaches.
Take it from me - finding a leak by accident is NOT the way to go! 😅
