Welcome back to Home Habits with #yourHOMEgirl! This week’s habit is all about building and maintaining your home emergency kit.

WHY Does This Matter?

When an emergency happens, having the right supplies on hand can make all the difference in your attitude and outcome. Whether it’s a power outage or a natural disaster, being prepared helps you handle unexpected situations with ease and efficiency - two things I love.

What to Include in a Home Emergency Kit:

Your home kit should cover essentials that keep you warm, safe, and connected. Here’s a checklist to get you started:
  • Flashlights and Extra Batteries: Essential for power outages.
  • Bottled Water, Non-Perishable Snacks, and Can Opener: To help you stay hydrated and nourished.
  • Whistle and/or Flares: To signal for help.
  • Warm Blankets: Layer up to conserve body heat.
  • First Aid Kit: Be ready for minor injuries.
  • Phone/Tech Chargers: A portable power bank is a great addition to your kit.
  • Candles and Matches: Handy for light and warmth in a pinch (BUT, use cautiously).
  • Battery-Powered Radio: Stay informed about updates.

BONUS TIP: Don’t Forget Your Car Kit

Your car deserves its own emergency kit, especially if you're in a location like me where road conditions and weather can be unpredictable. Here’s what to include:

  • Jumper Cables: A lifesaver for dead batteries.
  • Small Snow Shovel and Ice Scraper: To clear paths and windshields quickly.
  • Kitty Litter or Sand: To help create traction if you’re stuck.
  • Warm Accessories: Keep spare gloves, hats, and a blankets on hand.
  • Snacks and Water: To stay hydrated and nourished.
  • Flashlight and Batteries: To make car trouble at night safer to manage.

Habit Frequency

Start the year strong by creating or updating your kits now. Then, plan to restock and check your kits seasonally - especially as you head into winter months - or at the very least, every January.
Be sure to check out ready.gov for more information on what to include in your home and car kits so you can be prepared and gain peace of mind.

Are You in the Habit Yet?

Tell me, is this something you’ve already been doing or is this a new idea to you? Turst me. Taking this small step can save you a lot of stress if/when you find yourself in an emergency situation.

Until next time... Happy home habit keeping!
